MC Skibadee was a formidable figure in the UK scene, credited with being the first psychedelic vinyl DJ, extolling the virtues of acid house and dubstep with his weekly radio show on Rinse FM and his drum ’n’ bass show on BPM. He also had five singles in the charts under various aliases. He appeared at Glastonbury in 1999 during Primal Scream’s assault on the Pyramid Stage and performed every year at both Tim Westwood’s Big Apple parties that promoted British raves.

The influential producer was treated by doctors to remove fluid from his brain in early February. He was recovering in hospital and his health deteriorated after that. A statement from his record label Ninja Tune said: “He has passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones. He leaves a huge legacy of contribution. MC Skibadee, who started his career in the 1980s as a funky breakbeat DJ, pioneering a genre later called drum ’n’ bass and crafting classics such as ”Good Times” and ”One Drop of Ecstasy” among many others, has died following a long battle with cancer.
