Patterson was born in Illinois, Chicago d she has her graduation from the University of California in the year 1923. At the young age of 22, Patterson started working as a professor and she initiated her journey through her college. She had the prestigious offer to be a professor at Hampton College which is a black college historically in Virginia. Patterson worked there for about 5 years and she then moved to New York later. After moving to New York, Patterson started working as a Harlem artist in the Burgeoning community and joined several social works as well. After working for years for social movements Patterson became the centre of attention of people.

Harlem was the place where Patterson kept a lot of rallies and also many protests as well. She was the one who opened a salon in Harlem which was the first to be opened there. She was also friends with many great people like Langston Hughes who is a great author and a writer as well. Langston and Patterson not only were social activists but they were good friends who worked together for the soviet government and society as well. They founded the Soviet Union and Harlem Chapter of friends which were established in 1932. Patterson is widely used to speak about the discrimination that black people used to face in America and the difficulties that they went through.

Paterson was a part of the communist Part of America and she chose 22 writers, artists and also Intellectuals to write and also film the discriminations that are happening against black people and make a film on it as well, This film was like the soviet film to spread words all across the world. Dorsey Westa and Langston who are great writers were also a part of this community and the group formed to film. Although the group never succeed in making the film as there was a lack of funds and demands as well. Patterson with the help of Langston found the Suitcase theatre in Harlem they initiated to performance played by Langston in the USA. The play that used to get featured in the USA theatre, Suitcase, featured movies that showcased the actors and writers from the black community and also various struggles that they had to go through. This theatre is still there for all the black community and students, teachers and people who respect the community still gather at the place to pass on prayers and also respect the community. Later Patterson after establishing the theatre moved to New York where she stayed as the amber of the Harlem renaissance and also a funder at the New York School for Social work.
